Prayer start times and Iqamah: know the difference

Understand which time a prayer app calculates, which time a mosque announces and what to check before joining a congregation.

Two times can answer two different questions

A prayer app and a mosque noticeboard may show different numbers because they describe different things. A calculated start answers when the selected calculation convention places the beginning of a prayer period. A congregation entry tells you when a particular mosque plans to gather people for that prayer.

Before comparing numbers, look for words such as Begins, Start, Iqamah or Jama‘at. The distinction is more useful than assuming every number beside a prayer name has the same meaning. Some timetables display both; others display only one.

How a mosque timetable makes the distinction

Cambridge Central Mosque’s public timetable is an example of a site that separates beginning times from congregation entries. It also gives Friday information separately. We link the mosque’s page as an illustration of the layout, not as a timetable for every city.

Do not transfer a mosque’s congregation interval to another location. Even two mosques nearby can organise attendance differently. The practical step is to consult the current timetable of the mosque you intend to visit.

  • Find the mosque’s official website or current notice.
  • Check the date and whether the schedule has recently changed.
  • Look for separate arrangements for Friday or special events.
  • If an entry is unclear, contact the mosque rather than guessing from an app.

What AL-Naqawa shows

Our city pages display calculated prayer starts using the selected method, Asr rule and adjustments. They are not a live feed of mosque congregation times. Changing the calculation method will not turn those results into a mosque’s schedule.

If a mosque’s start-time column differs from the website, compare location, date and calculation settings. If its congregation column differs, first establish whether you are comparing the same kind of time. That simple question can save a great deal of unnecessary setting changes.

Check Friday arrangements directly

AL-Naqawa does not derive Jumuah sessions from Dhuhr. A mosque may advertise a sermon time, an entry time or more than one congregation. Read the notice as a whole, including access instructions, instead of treating a single clock value as a universal appointment.

For questions about your individual religious circumstances, a trusted local teacher or mosque is the appropriate source. This article explains timetable labels and the limits of the website’s calculation.
