A new chapter beside a historic mosque
Jamae Chulia Heritage officially opened in Singapore's Chinatown on 24 October 2026, according to MUIS, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore. The development combines heritage and community spaces with residences, shops and dining, between Mosque Street and Pagoda Street.
In his opening speech, Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Zaqy Mohamad placed the project beside the continuing story of Masjid Jamae (Chulia), which MUIS says marks its bicentenary this year. He described the area as part of the Indian Muslim community's long presence in Chinatown.
What the heritage spaces explore
The announcement describes a heritage gallery about Indian Muslim contributions to Singapore, including the Wakaf Jamae Heritage Trail linking six heritage institutions and commercial assets. It also identifies a new mural by Benedict Tay and Lucas Goh depicting the spice journey of early settlers.
MUIS presents the dining and events space, together with the mosque’s Community Plaza, as places for future gatherings and cultural programmes. Specific activities and visitor arrangements still need to be checked with the relevant venue.
How the wakaf connects past and present
Wakaf refers here to an endowment intended to provide continuing benefits. The official project annex explains that rental proceeds from Wakaf Jamae properties support the upkeep of Jamae Chulia Mosque, Al-Abrar Mosque and Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre.
The annex describes four conserved pre-war shophouses on Pagoda Street connected to a new building on Mosque Street, and records project completion in June 2026. That completion date is separate from the official opening reported on 24 October.
Before planning a visit
MUIS’s mosque directory lists Jamae Chulia Mosque at 218 South Bridge Road, Singapore 058767. Use that directory for the mosque’s contact details, and confirm the heritage gallery’s entrance and visiting arrangements separately.
For readers planning a heritage outing, AL-Naqawa suggests a few questions to settle before setting off:
- Is the gallery open for individual visits, or does it require a booking?
- What are the current hours, tour arrangements and accessibility provisions?
- Which entrance should you use, and how will the visit fit around your travel and prayer plans?
