Sunset Behind a Building: What a Prayer Timetable Can Tell You

A blocked view of the Sun is different from a calculated horizon crossing. Learn what to record before comparing a timetable with what you see.

A hidden Sun and a calculated sunset are different observations

A building can hide the Sun while it is still above the astronomical horizon. If you compare that moment with a timetable, first establish what each observation represents. A rooftop, a mountain ridge and an open view across level ground do not offer the same horizon.

The US Naval Observatory describes conventional sunrise and sunset using the Sun’s upper edge at the horizon, with average atmospheric conditions and a level region. Those assumptions help explain why a clock time and your view through a window can differ.

Record the observation before changing settings

Write down the date, city, location, viewing direction and the exact time shown on your device. Describe the obstruction. Avoid recording a neighbour’s address or sharing private coordinates when a city and a general description will explain the problem.

Then record the timetable’s method, Asr rule and any manual minute adjustments. If these inputs are missing, another person cannot tell whether you compared the same calculation. A photograph of a darkening street alone cannot establish a calculation error.

Keep the technical question separate from religious guidance

Do not add or subtract minutes simply to make a timetable match a nearby roofline. Ask which horizon and location the calculation assumes, and consult your local mosque or a qualified religious adviser about practice in your circumstances. This article explains a comparison problem; it does not issue a ruling about when to pray.

For a reproducible website comparison, keep one city, one date and the same settings on both screens. Change one input at a time and note the result. A city-centre timetable should not be described as a verified measurement from your balcony.
