Standard or Hanafi Asr: what changes in your timetable?

Understand the Asr shadow-rule setting, how to compare it fairly and why a method name alone does not describe every timetable choice.

What the setting means

Standard and Hanafi are labels you may see beside Asr in a prayer app. In AL-Naqawa’s calculation engine, the setting selects the shadow factor used to determine the afternoon event. Standard uses a factor of one and Hanafi a factor of two, with the object’s shadow at solar noon taken into account.

That last detail matters: the calculation is not a simple instruction to wait until a visible shadow has an arbitrary length. The engine relates the chosen factor to the sun’s position for the place and date. This page explains the software setting; it is not a ruling on which convention you should follow.

Keep the other choices fixed

To investigate Asr, select one city and one date. Leave the named method, time zone, high-latitude rule and manual minute adjustments unchanged. Change only the Asr rule, and compare the Asr result.

Do not assume a fixed number of minutes separates the two results every day. Solar geometry changes with the season and location. A difference observed today is not a permanent offset you can add to every future timetable.

  • Write down your original setting before changing it.
  • Check whether the comparison is between calculated starts or congregation times.
  • Restore the setting you intend to follow after testing.

A method and an Asr rule are separate controls

A named method may set twilight angles, intervals and built-in adjustments. The Asr rule is an additional choice exposed by this website. Matching the method name in two apps therefore does not prove that all their settings match.

If only Asr differs, inspect this control before changing the entire method. If several prayers differ, compare the remaining inputs as well. This makes the process easier to explain and avoids changing unrelated parts of your schedule.

Check the timetable you normally follow

Ask your local mosque which Asr convention its timetable follows and whether it adds a separate congregation time. If you move city or join a different community, confirm the convention instead of assuming an old screenshot still applies.

On AL-Naqawa, open the timetable’s settings to inspect the Asr rule and offsets. Saved preferences belong to this browser, so check them again on another device. The method comparison is a way to understand the calculation; it does not replace local religious guidance.
